10 Features to Consider When Buying Baby Monitors

Buying a quality baby monitor is one of the very overwhelming decisions you will have to make before your baby arrives. You already have a ton of important decisions to make and loads of items to buy before your little one is born. The last thing you want is to get overwhelmed with tons of options, features and bonuses that come along with baby monitors.

We’re going to help simplify this decision by providing you with information about the best features to look out for. While you don’t necessarily need all of these features, they are definitely going to make your life as a new parent a little easier to handle.

Night Vision

One feature you really want to look for is a quality night vision. Motorola cameras have outstanding night vision, which allows you to see everything in great detail even in pitch dark rooms. This is crucial because you’ll be watching your baby who’s sleeping in a dark or under-lit room. A quality baby monitor will have great night vision, allowing you to view your child, the crib and other details with ease.

Display Screen Size

The size of the portable parent unit (monitor) is also something important worth considering. Unless you plan on getting a Wi-Fi baby monitor and use it exclusively with the app, you’ll be spending a lot of time checking in on your child through the monitor. You’ll want the screen to be large enough to have a nice view of your child, but slim enough to be portable. Motorola makes numerous models that have a 5-inch screen, yet are slim enough to be easily portable such as theMBP36XL.

Temperature Sensor

Being able to know exactly what the temperature is in your baby’s room at all times is a great feature found on most Motorola baby monitors powered by Hubble Connected. Temperature is a touchy subject with infants – just a single degree too hot or too cool can make a huge difference in your child’s sleep. These temperature sensors are usually found within the camera itself and is displayed on the parent unit (baby monitor) or within theHubble app.

Wide Angle View

Getting an excellent view of the entire room is great, because you won’t have to spend your time panning and tilting the camera as you baby turns into a walking-toddler. Motorola cameras tend to have the biggest range in the industry, such as theFocus71, which is primarily a home security camera, but can also double as a baby camera. This model has a 90-degree wide angle view so you can really capture all angles of the room.

HD Video Quality

Viewing your child in high definition is so much more enjoyable than watching them on a grainy screen with poor quality. This is a feature that you won’t want to pass up on. Fortunately, most baby monitors at Hubble Connected have HD quality in 1080p, so you can really see every little detail in the room with ease. The difference may seem minor, but we guarantee that once you experience an HD quality baby monitor, you’ll never want to go back to grainy video quality ever again.

Battery Life

The battery life of the baby monitor (parent unit) is also highly important. Most parents plug in the monitor during the night, but carry it along with them during the day. If your child spends 3 to 4 hours napping during the day, you’ll want the monitor’s battery to at least last that long. You should go for a baby monitor that has a battery that can last 4 to 6 hours. You won’t really need more battery life, unless you don’t plan on plugging it in during the night.

Baby Monitor Range

The range of the baby monitor is essentially how far away you can walk from the camera with the handheld parent unit. Most Motorola baby monitors have a 1,000-foot range. However, keep in mind that this is in a clear line of sight without any nearby electronics or walls. Any electronics or walls will reduce the range on any brand’s baby monitor. In most homes, the 1,000 feet offered by Motorola baby monitors is more than enough to go everywhere in the house without dealing with loss of signal. However, you shouldn’t choose a monitor with anything less than 1,000 feet.

Zoom Lens

Having a camera that has a zoom lens is another excellent feature that you’ll want to look for. Sometimes, you’ll need to zoom in to see whether or not your child is sleeping. With a zoom lens, you can easily enlarge the screen and get a clearer image of what you need to see. This is especially useful during night vision, when visibility is reduced. Fortunately, baby cameras powered by Hubble Connected comes with a zoom lens and you can also zoom in while viewing the live feed in the mobile app.

Pan & Tilt

If you want to be able to check in on the whole room (useful when your baby becomes a toddler), then you’ll certainly want to consider a model that has pan and tilt features. Models such as theMBP50-G2have remote pan and tilt, so you can move the camera’s view from the parent unit. Connected models that have this feature also allow you to control the view angle from within the Hubble app.

Internet Connected

If you have a larger budget and want to get the best of the best, a connected model is the way to go. Internet connected baby monitors such as theHalo+are excellent for busy parents who go back to work early. You can check in on your sleeping child while at work with your mobile phone, tablet or computer. You can play lullabies from a distance and even take video recordings or snapshots of the live feed so you can cherish those moments forever.
